Marleen van de Velde is a printmaker, drawing artist and designer based in Breda, NL. Currently working the mezzotint technique.
Black is everything, White is nothing. Black is nothing, White is everything. Grey is neither, And both.
Extremes directly opposite and also next to each other, inextricably linked, equal. They need each other, and everything in between. Marleen needs them both.
Mezzotint—a slow, time-consuming and labour-intensive printmaking technique. From dark to light, contrasts, smooth gradations, the permanence of deep black ink. The process that forces to slow down.
The sketch—the light and fragile lines, the impermanence of the pencil, incompleteness, the search for the right shapes, the field of play. The limitations that provide freedom and endless possibilities. The potential.
Through her work, Marleen enters a state of being—connected to personal moments—in a place between the past and the future. An experience centred on feeling, intuition, play and the slow process of creation.
